test/Makefile.in (and test/Makefile.win, not that I can test that) needs to
propagate test failure error codes. At present, you can have some tests fail
but the make job appears to succeed.

I'm not sure why we're testing here for exit status of 255 (unrelated to the
attached patch). It looks to me like we should be testing for exit status != 0.
I'll commit some patches to the trunk to that effect.

Unix shell script won't work in this case (needs to be ported to cmd.exe syntax)
but I'll take a look at that exception.
