[Proposal] NPanday 2.0 Milestones

Hi All,

With our recent move to ASF, we would like to set some milestones for
NPanday 2.0.

Here are some of the things we proposed to be prioritized before we push
out NPanday 2.0:

1) Removal of the UAC (so that NPanday will be more maven-like since it
will have only one repository)
2) Support for VS 2010 and .Net 4.0
3) Refactor .net source code especially Addin module

If you have any thing to add, feel free to send out comments/suggestions
to this thread.

Thanks,

liit

I agree - as long as there are people willing to drive it. As I said earlier, this would be good to do in parallel - it's a good time to focus on the "major surgery", but we don't want that to stop releases either.

The SVN move is complete, so you can commit when ready - either way it'll be on the right branch :)

We can gradually move over the other infrastructure as we go.

I'd be fine with this, or the alternative of branching a "stable branch" (npanday-1.2.x) and having trunk for the other work. I tend to prefer the latter as you only ever have to merge the branch to trunk, not trunk to branch and then back again (or risk the branch getting out of date).

Hi all,

First congrats on 1.2.1 and the successful move to apache.

Removing UAC/RDF seems to me like pretty major surgery. Could we perhaps get
some more point releases out before that work is ready for release?

I'd like to get http://npanday.codeplex.com/workitem/13452 into the next
release, which I should get committed pretty soon, now the apache move is
complete.

If the UAC work would be very disruptive, it might be better to do that on a
feature branch, while other smaller work continues on the trunk. Then when
the branch has stabilised a bit, it can come back to trunk.

(forgive me if I'm speaking out of turn...I'm the release/build manager at
my work, so I have ways I like to do things :)

cheers,
Craig

One thing I think is worth considering, perhaps in parallel, is a release within the incubator (without needing to make major changes considered for 2.0). For example, a release focused on any remaining changes needed for VS 2010 / .NET 4.0.

I agree, this (and the RDF) should be the top priority.

Do you see this impacting the plugins / structure available or the shared libraries?

Yes. This will greatly affect the plugins and how the .dll artifacts will be resolved. I think identifying the the major tasks for this epic issue will help us speed up on fixing this item.

I'd also like to see this split out into a separate trunk, so the releases can occur independently.

This will be separate from the removing of the uac then?
