proxy not sending "Via:" header..?

My understanding, perhaps incorrect, was that proxy servers should send a Via:
header when they relay a request, i.e.

Via: Apache/1.2

or something like that, other than the conventional way which is to tack it
onto the User-Agent header. Apache doesn't seem to do that; which worries me,
as apparently there's nothing in proxy requests which distinguish them from
direct connections, and thus any attempt I as a server maintainer or statistics
gatherer might try to do to tell how many requests are coming to me via a proxy
server are somewhat thwarted. On the other hand, for privacy or "equality of
content" reasons it might be best to make the proxy as transparant as
possible.  Thoughts?

	Brian

correction: I do see the proxy sending along a "Proxy-Connection:" header as a
distinguishing characteristic, but not much else.

It looks like squid sends a Forwarded: header, but no Via: header.

Cf (edited for the intersting parts):

	# telnet proxy.io.com 3128
	GET http://www.io.com/error/env.cgi HTTP/1.0

	HTTP/1.0 200 OK
[etc]
	Content-type: text/html

[etc]
	HTTP_FORWARDED=by http://proxy.io.com:3128/ for 199.170.88.19
	HTTP_HOST=www.io.com
	REMOTE_ADDR=199.170.88.22
	REMOTE_HOST=ft-meade.io.com
[etc]

Via is a HTTP/1.1 thing. Our proxy server is HTTP/1.0. There are a
whole lot of things HTTP/1.1 proxies should do that mod_proxy doesn't
do. Via is the least of them.

Oh, and you have the syntax wrong. I don't have the spec in front of
me, but it uses the hostname and HTTP version number. The product id
tag can be put into a comment, but it's not required.
