cocoon2.0.3/pdf/tomcat4.0.1

hi!

i am trying to get a pdf-output from an html-file including pictures
(jpg/gif).


everything works fine except for the pictures.
i used code like: 
<fo:external-graphic src="cup.gif"/>,
<fo:external-graphic src="http://www.cafeconleche.org/cup.gif"/>


unfortunally it does not work at all.
i am working with suse linux 8.0, cocoon 2.0.3 tomcat 4.0.1. if starting
the
request acroread crashes with the comment: 


There was an error opening this document. Could not repair file.



as soon as i delete the fo-graphic-line i get a suitable pdf-output! 

any hints welcome
