POLL: JDK 1.5

Hi ho folks!

Over at the dev-list we've had a bit of discussion on

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/JSPWIKI-121

Please let us know if moving to JDK 1.5 would give you any real
problems. Please respond to this list directly with +1, 0, -1, where
they mean the following things:

+1 : JDK 1.5 is not a problem, go ahead
0 : I don't care - my current system is 1.4 but I can upgrade
-1 : I am on 1.4 and cannot upgrade.

JSPWiki 2.6 will stay 1.4, but we're currently thinking whether 2.8
should already use 1.5. JSPWiki 3 is going to require JDK 5 in any
case, but there have been some noise in the dev community on moving
to JDK 5 already in 2.8, as well as some noises against it. So this
is an attempt to figure out where our userbase really is.

/Janne

Both enterprise Wiki's and my private Wiki are on 1.5 and 1.6
respectively.

A note on backwards compatibility: run the old stuff in a virtual
machine, if that's too much hassle migrate the Wiki into its own box.
Gets rid of annoying problems like interference.
And at least on Linux boxes its perfectly fine to run multiple JDK's
parallel. If there is more than one application on JBoss/Tomcat or
whatever, Glassfish or an alternative webserver should solve the
dependencies.

Cheers,
Joerg

Have resolved issues with JDK 5 support (will be entirely JDK 5
compatible by the time in 2008 when it could be an issue for me).

This does not resolve the issue for local/rural libraries and
non-profit organizations, but I will not be able to provide
metrics on them so an argument here cannot be sustained.

I'm running JSPWiki on JDK5 on Linux and JDK5 on z/OS.
The z/OS systems also still run JDK 1.3 and JDK 1.4. There's no operational
limitation in running multiple JDK's, maybe that is an option for some of
you ?

Running on 1.4 JDK at enterprise on WLS, but upgrade is not planned.
Still need to upgrade of 1.2.6, so no big deal on short term.

I wish I had offered some pills or other money related things in that
mail, obviously it would have saved that account from becoming public. I
hope to remember that the next time I post from the wrong account :*)

Thanks for the answers - I won't take any more action but wait for my

And for the record, the purpose of moderation is to keep spam from
showing up on the lists. It's not to restrict messages from specific
users. As a moderator, if I see a message that appears to be relevant
to the group, I'll allow it regardless of what email address it comes
from. I might look closer at a message that comes from a suspicious
address (like only allow that one message) but I'm certainly not
filtering messages to keep email addresses private.

Actually, most email Apache email lists are moderated, and emails from
non-subscribed users do not go through to the list unless the moderator
approves it. There is just too much spam around to allow non-subscribed
posts. I'm surprised to hear that jspwiki lists do not have moderation

Olaf,

try contacting infrastructure@apache.org for these kinds of removal
requests. They should be able to help you out!

However, I don't think that it's according to Apache customs to close
mailing lists in such a way. People regularly Cc relevant developer
mailing lists, from what I've seen.

[I think this mailing list is monitored also by Nabble and some other

Access to mailing list... (was Re: POLL: JDK 1.5)

Posted by Olaf Kock <ok...@abstrakt.de>.
Hi,

just having accidentally posted using the wrong account - one that has
not been pested by spam yet - I'd like to ask for opinion (or action) on
limiting posts on this list to accounts that also receive mail posted here.

I suppose, that my other account finally will be spammed too after
appearing in any archives here, but others might benefit from such a
limitation.

I know that it's a weak protection against spam senders who might use
sender addresses as they please, but it would protect people like me
from their own stupidity...

If somebody also has access to any archive I'd appreciate deleting my
last mail regarding the JDK 1.5 poll, but I believe it's too late for
that...

Cheers + thanks,
Olaf

definitely, as 2.6 ist "just out" and paralell installation of multiple
jdks is not a problem, it should be no problem, even if anyone is
"still" on older versions. Enterprises desperately requiring the newest
version of JSPWiki (when it is out) should have no problems either
providing a separate environment (read server) for an application (just
declare the required jdk, possibly with tomcat, as part of the JSPWiki
installation) or install multiple jdks in parallell, which is also no
problem. I'm glad that JSPWiki does not require the latest and greatest
dotnet environment :)

For the same reason I'd also second Fabian Haupt about requiring Java6.
Somehow I'd like to increase the pace of Java upgrades in the field...

Cheers,
Olaf

Already on 1.5 in production and 1.6 for development. Given the length of
time (I'm guessing approximately 1 year based upon the 2.4 -> 2.6 release)
that it will take for the next version of JSPWiki to get to a stable
version, then issues of jumping directly to 1.6 should be mitigated, by
giving everyone plenty of time to prepare.

I'm actually using Java 1.6 - the benefit of working on my own small
project, so upgrade away!

For the reasons Murray has detailed (which has thankfully releived me
from having to make them here as I have elsewhere), I vote:

-1

But I fully understand the desire to move to using Java 5 features in
JSPWiki code. I recommend investigating Retroweaver as a means to move
the source level ahead while preserving JDK 1.4 compatiblity for
deployment purposes.
