- use tar -o  for V7 compatible archives (yuck).
- Find a way to restrict the path lengths to <100 characters, (and meet
other restrictions as well:)

We found it easier (for one company) to standardize on gnu tar, since the
Sun platform was our only problem, and there weren't tars compatible with
Sun tar available for all our other platforms.
