After another round of rewrite HIVE-6429 ended up with some refactoring in BinarySortableSerde.
Unfortunately it breaks some tests (which the original patch that changed BSS didn't, so I guess it must be really subtle or really stupid).
I don't have time now to track down that issue, so will submit a patch here, and do it later, to unblock HIVE-6429
