Codename for the new version?
Hi,
I would like know if there are some plan to put a codename for the new
version that will be release?
Or this is a practice only common from Adobe?
If are, I suggest do a contest, as we are doing for the logo.
What you think?
Regards.

Ok. Yes, I understand now and I agree with Doug.
Forget my sugestion for contest.
I was just curious if when release a codename will be put.
Like "Molehil", "Burrito" etc

With all due respects; I think we (both PPMC Members& mailing list members, and especially the folks who did the hard work on the first contest) need a break before we try to take on another contest.
It is true, as Jonathon said, that if you're a committer, you can't create your own code name for any development you want to do.
I believe--according to the Apache License--that any non-committer should be able to take the code out of the Apache SVN and create use their own code name for any development they want to do. You'll have to get a committer to commit it back to Apache Flex, though. Or find your own release mechanism outside of the scope of Apache Flex.

Someone suggested calling the first Apache release "lifeboat." I like that,
so it's what I have started referring to it as (it avoids the whole
discussion on version numbers.) I don't know if anyone else uses the term
though.

big +1, the best way to express a cool idea is with code. Even an ugly
quick prototype usually speaks much louder than a 100-email thread.
People who aren't Flex committers are welcome to create code elsewhere
and make this list aware of it, or attach it to a JIRA issue as a
contribution.
If Flex committers like what they see, that's a good step towards
being nominated as a committer.

Please god no. That's either my reply to the thread or my suggestion for a
codename, read it however you like.
But seriously, we don't need another 500-message thread to discuss
codenames like we had for logos. I think a logo is something important that
needed a vote. A codename for a release, not so much. I'm fine with people
throwing ideas out there (although I'd argue the project is a long way from
a codename-worthy release), but I'd prefer the PPMC peeps to just pick
something (if anything at all) and be done with it instead of doing the
whole community voting process.

If you want a GUI for git svn commands the Tower app has support. Also, git
svn commands should come with a standard Git installation, at least I
didn't have to install that separately.

Yep that works but it don't preserve checkins or commits (to git). So when your code gets checked in to SVN it will a miss a large amount of important info. I've (so far) not been able to work out a way around that.
For those you don't know git and svn can work fairly well together but sadly the standard version of git in OSX and the standard github client don't come with SVN support and you need to install git-svn.
There's a nice write up on how to install and use git-svn on OSX (what I happen to currently use) here:
http://intridea.com/posts/going-rogue-with-git-svn-on-os-x
It assumes you have MacPorts installed (you can also use Brew) which requires Xcode which is probably overkill for just wanting to use git svn, but being a developer you should already have it installed right? :-)
The initial check out of the flex SDK from SVN to Git will take some time and I'm guessing even more time when we get the "real" flex SDK with the full version history. On my machine with a decent (by Australian standards) internet connection it took over 2 hours.

For instance if I take a copy of the SDK make a lot of changes/commits
locally (in git) how would that be preserved when I handed it back to
committer to check in for me? Again not a big issue (and I'm guessing
there's no easy way) I'm just trying to work out what the best workflow is
here.

I would look at the git svn commands and manage my work from there if I
wasn't a committer. I believe it'll even let you create patches from your
Git branch for SVN.

That's good to know.
Any idea how version control comments and commits could be preserved? For instance if I take a copy of the SDK make a lot of changes/commits locally (in git) how would that be preserved when I handed it back to committer to check in for me? Again not a big issue (and I'm guessing there's no easy way) I'm just trying to work out what the best workflow is here.

It doesn't have to go under the committer's name.
I could easily create a folder named 'McClean' and your code could go in
there, while I still have my own folder.

Any of our current committers can nominate anyone to become a committer. Read the apache docs on the process.

Hi Jonathan,
> You could always work with a committer and push up your idea.
Sure but would it then go under the committers name not yours? And you have to go through them for every check in or change. Not that I think it's a big issue I've just seen a few people on the list suggest/imply that anyone can place code on the whiteboard area when it's not quite as straight forward as that.
> Ultimately the idea of a "codename" goes back to the idea of a "roadmap"; and this has been discussed before on the list.
True "codenames" fit in more with the traditional project/release cycle. But as we don't know what the next version of Apache Flex is going to be (4.7 or perhaps 4.8 seem likely) perhaps coming up with a code name for is is a good idea. How about picking a name of an old arcade game? There's a wide range of names and it has geek appeal.
Ah looking at the couple of responses that just come in I guess there's a clear consensus on it and that's a no to code names. :-)
Thanks,
Justin

You could always work with a committer and push up your idea. Ultimately
the idea of a "codename" goes back to the idea of a "roadmap"; and this has
been discussed before on the list. Mainly rather than coming to a consensus
and discussing a roadmap people should start just coding and see who gets
interested and on whatever subject.

Hi Jonathan,
Only people on the initial committers list are able to create and commit to the whiteboard section. I assume we would want to get suggestions from a wider range of people?
Thanks,
Justin
