[jira] Created: (FOR-813) 'Forrest run' as Windows Service

'Forrest run' as Windows Service
--------------------------------

         Key: FOR-813
         URL: http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/FOR-813
     Project: Forrest
        Type: New Feature
  Components: Launch 'forrest run'
    Versions: 0.7, 0.8-dev
    Reporter: Johannes Schaefer
 Assigned to: Johannes Schaefer
    Priority: Minor

Up to now Forrest has to run in a command window on Windows
using 'forrest run'. For Server Operation this is not acceptable, so,
Forrest hasa to run as a Windows (Win32, WinNT) Service.

Jetty may run as such a Service using a wrapper, e.g.
"... the java wrapper provided by http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.org
to provide jetty as an Win32 service."
(from jetty-4.2.25\extra\win32\readme.txt)

The license does not say "somewhere obvious", so just doing our normal license placement and naming is fine.

Sorry that i didn't answer Gav's 23/Jun/07 comment. We can determine easy ones like this by ourselves. See legal-discuss@ yesterday: http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/www-legal-discuss/200710.mbox/%3c005f01c80ebb$ab0b5920$0200a8c0@developer%3e

The current licence only states that the license-wrapper.txt be included somewhere obvious, otherwise no restrictions.
I guess it's worth checking with legal@ unless someone can confirm it is ok without doing that.

There is also a later version of the wrapper since this issue was opened.

Yes the license is fine. Just checkin beside the jar.

I had never thought to use 'forrest run' as a long-standing
service. Always assumed need to build as a war and run
in a servlet container, e.g. Tomcat or full Jetty.
Our bundled Jetty does not have all the facilities.

It looks just fine to me, can some other people please give it a look
over - we need to have many eyes on this (it's a very short and simple
license that essentially says you can do anything as long as you include
the original copyright header)

Now that is sorted, we need to revisit the issue.

What is the consensus from current devs, do we want to persue this
and add it in to our distribution (in /tools/ maybe).

I'd like to know so that the next step of testing it out on Forrest
can be done.

Thanks
