document() Namespaces problem

I am running Sun JDK 1.3.1 on Windows NT 4.0, Tomcat 4.0.1, Cocoon 2.0.1,
(and with Cocoon) Xerces 1.4.4, and Xalan 2.2.0-D14
I have adjusted Tomcat to NOT proivde a parser to my application.
