M4?

I think M4 is long overdue. Just these two issues warrant a release -
CAY-984, CAY-999, and we have so much more. I still hope to squeeze a
few more bug fixes in it, but I feel like we need to release the next
milestone rather sooner than later.

I don't leave for another week and a half. I've just been busy with
the whole prep thing. Doing the Windows assembly stuff would be a
welcome break ;-)

Once I leave for the trip, I can assure you won't hear from me :-P

C'mon, you should be enjoying yourself during that time :-) Although

Anyways, please don't feel obligated to work on the release during
your vacation time. We'll just have to pay attention to the windows
assembly process.

I agree. I just haven't been in a position to lead up the release
this time. I'll likely be on my honeymoon during the vote in fact.

I will try to squeeze the maven magic for making ZIP assemblies for
Windows though.

In a way they will be as all fixes against M4 must be manually
duplicated on the trunk.

Well, this is good timing for me to update our commercial project with
this release, so I'll be able to give it a good workout within our
product over the next 2 weeks, both here in QA testing and in a
limited client beta.

Also, remember that Hudson is running the tests only against Cayenne
trunk so any fixes which go into M4 don't get the tests run
automatically against them.

Finally the release is tagged.

https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/cayenne/main/tags/3.0M4/cayenne/

So now the testing can begin without regard to the future trunk
changes...

Phew... just finished all the split/outer join tasks. This allowed me
to close a whole bunch of related Jiras, so hopefully the new release
will make a bunch of users happy. I have a few smaller things before
we can tag the release. I guess I can take care of CAY-1046 task that
Kevin opened - it is fairly straightforward and we won't have to wait
till he comes back from vacation to post the release.

In the meantime I encourage everyone to try the new split/outer join
stuff and let me know if things don't work as expected (or not very
usable for whatever reason).

Without starting an IDE war, you might want to check out IDEA. It has a
feature for shelving changes, which I've found incredibly useful in the
absence of local commits. It basically creates a patch of a changeset that
it manages internally and can reapply at any time. While it sounds simple
enough, it's done very well and has saved me a lot of hassle.

There is still no write SVN access, so we can't tag the release and
will have to wait. There was a RAID failure and now while the
replacement machine is being setup, all access is read-only.

And as it often happens, I started on a big new development on the eve
of the release (CAY-929, CAY-560). And I honestly didn't mean to
include that in M4 (i.e. the plan was to wait with this commit till
after we tag the release)... But if I finish it during the SVN
downtime, we might as well put it in the release.

CAY-929 (the modern join syntax for SelectQuery) is already finished
and now I am adding the OUTER join semantics to expressions. I am not
used to keep so many unrelated changes uncommitted and without
multiple clear rollback points, but I guess I'll survive it that time...
