Enable Kafka Authentication on 0.9

We're using Kafka 0.9 ( CDH ) but it's unsecured now and we want to enable
authentication ( authorization is nice to have ) .

Any documentation / blog/ suggestion on how to do it on active cluster ?
Is Kerberoes the only way to do it ? Our OPS is not a big fan of Kerberoes
and prefers something like LDAP.
