That's weird, because "bare" FreeMarker never parses or otherwise change the static text sections of the templates. I have tried your templates anyway, and not surprisingly, I can't recreate this problem. By "bare" FreeMarker I mean that you don't use some special {{Writer}}, and don't have some output filtering FTL directive in effect, nor do you have some custom {{TemplateLoader}} that pre-processes the templates. I suggest looking into these possibilities.
