[DISCUSSION] New target version after release 4.5.0

Hi!

After releasing Impala 4.5.0, I would like to start a discussion about
the new target version:
- There is an ongoing discussion about feature deprecation in the
following email thread (
https://lists.apache.org/thread/zl77c23o9rl82llxo0b5k5x5ltq697qc),
which suggests that Impala 5.0 could be the next target version.
- The 4.6.0 is the next convenient step in versioning, maybe the
above-mentioned breaking changes should not fit in a minor release.

Please share your thoughts.

Thanks, Peter

Based on this discussion, I set the next version for 5.0.0
As Zoltan already wrote, I would like to ask the community to collect
any potentially breaking change that we would like to deliver under
the Impala 5 Epic JIRA
<https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/IMPALA-12674>

Thanks, Peter

Preparing to release a new major version makes sense to me.
Please note we have a Jira Epic about Impala 5: IMPALA-12674
<https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/IMPALA-12674>
Please collect any item - the potentially breaking changes - that we want
to deliver.

Cheers,
    Zoltan

Re: [DISCUSSION] New target version after release 4.5.0

Posted by Riza Suminto <ri...@cloudera.com>.
We already have major refactoring going on to support the Iceberg REST
catalog (IMPALA-13739 <https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/IMPALA-13739>).
I think we should aim for Impala 5.0 next to also start major upgrades and
removing deprecated features.

Regards,
Riza
