I tried to replicate this failure with no luck.
I am running on a Macbook Pro, with Mac OSX version 10.9.1 with Apache
OpenOffice version 4.0.1.
Steps I ran attempting to replicate:
1. I sent myself an email with two document attachments. Both were written in
OpenOffice with a file extension of .odt. However, one was attached checking
off the ability to open using a Window based application. I opened both of
these files successfully using OpenOffice.
2. I sent myself the same email to my work address, then emailed it back from
that email account. I also successfully opened the documents from that email
as well.
3. I sent myself an email from my work email account, with a Microsoft Word
document with a file extension of .docx. When I attempted to open the .docx
file using OpenOffice, by using the right-click menu options, Microsoft Word
opened anyway, (trumped OpenOffice?). Maybe this is where the other user's
failure lies? Was she/he trying to open a Microsoft Word document using
OpenOffice application?
4. Next, I saved the .docx file in my Documents folder, with an extension of
.odt, to force OpenOffice to open it. When I attempted to open it, I received
a corruption error pop-up window.
