xmlns attributes still out of reach?

Hello,

I am trying to write a stylesheet that builds documentation from our set
of xml-schema files. In order to do that, I need to build links to
complexTypes that exist in other xsd files. The elements are defined
like
<xs:element name="x" type="z:y"/>
where the namespace z is defined in the root of the the schema file like
<xs:schema .... xmlns:z="http://whatever/z">
then the namespace is imported like
<xs:import namespace="http://whatever/z" schemaLocation="z.xsd" />

Now, I want to build a link to the type y in file z in the form
'http://z.xsd#y' so in order to do that, I need access to the xmlns tags
to match the namespace prefix of the element type attribute with the
namespace prefix in the xmlns attributes

I've seen a bunch of older posts to this list talking about the fact
that the xmlns attributes are not, in fact, in the DOM. So I was
wondering, is this still true and has anyone found a work around for it?

thanks in advance for any response.

chad
