do we have a list of test cases that result in seg faults so we can easily reproduce?

> Should gracefully handle missing configuration options. In some cases we can make assumptions as long as those assumptions are well defined. The last thing that should occur is a seg fault, which currently happens for many constructed objects that rely on missing paths.
