I asked this same question a few weeks ago, and did some research of my own.
There are many webmail clients which will work with JAMES - commercial and
free. Unfortunately, all the "free" versions are NOT under a Apache-style
license, favoring GPL instead. Here is are the links someone posted in
reply:

ICEMail: Java-Based Email Client. Built using JavaMail APIs, JavaBeans
Activation Framework, JFC 1.1.1 and distributed under the GPL
with source code. http://www.icemail.org

Grendel: Open source JavaMail based Email client from the mozilla.org folks.
Available at: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/grendel

TDAC's E-Mail Client - Java, Free beta binary
http://www.tdac.com/pages/email.html

More can be found from

The best I found so far (for licensing reasons alone) was the client
included with sun's mail sdk. simply modify the servlet to use
protocol="pop3" (replacing = "smtp") and you can connect to james.

I have seen in the apache-jetspeed list a renewed interest in client
applications including email, so if you are looking for Apache-licensed
solutions, you might look at their maillist archive as well.
