troubles installing+execution
hi there,
i've tried to install properly but i don't know if i've done it so. i
haven't find where is defined the java and such directories but started the
server instead (i have jdk 1.3 on the system)
when starting the firsts times, everything was ok. right now, it says it
'can't start http server'
what's the problem in here, then? no troubleshooting faq found regarding
to this problem ....
thanks for your attention and support

Xindice's http server is running on port 4080. If there is already
a program running on this port, it will cause a conflict.
To solve this problem, you can edit the file system.xml in
$XINDICE_HOME/config and replace 4080 by the port you want Xindice
to listen on.

Nope. But if you just need the API docs, you can get them at:

If it says "listen", then there is a process that is running and
using that port. There are two ways to close the port, one
is to kill the process. The other is to reboot the machine.
Beyond that, I don't know of a way. I also don't know of
a way to determine which process/pid is actually using the
port...

hi mark,
first of all thanks again. it appears to be in use the 4080 but no
application is related to that port
:*4080 listen
how do i close that port for beign able to start again the server?
sorry if i'm bothering you all with my newbie questions
thanks to all

To see the ports in use:
netstat -a
Look for "Listening" ports. Netstat displays a lot of information, most
of it is cryptic ;-). It displays the local port and the remote port. If
it shows a name instead of a port, it is using the value from the "services"
file.

hi there carsten and the rest
thanks for your example. it's, indeed clear to you all that i'm a linux
newbie ;)
i've done it so, as well as XINDICE_HOME but nothing changed. i checked
for the loclahost:4080 and it does works. how might i see the ports that
are running on the machine?
so, the situation right now is that is supposed to be xindice server
running but it doesn't appear thru ps. i probably reset the machine to try
again
thanks anyway for all your support

In addition to killing the process, you should remove the file
xindice.pid in the directory $XINDICE_HOME/config
You can find Java's home directory by typing "which java", e.g.
/usr/local/java/bin/java. Omit the file name "java" and the "bin"
branch and you'll get the directory being the expected value
for the environment variable JAVA_HOME.
After defining JAVA_HOME try to restart your Xindice server

You might have a half running server as a result of incomplete installation. Check if you are having running processes for Xindice, use something like
ps -ef | grep xindice
provided you have "xindice" in your path to the program. Such processes would block the port that is being used by the http server and result in the message you get. Take note of the process numbers and kill all such processes. After this you should be able to restart your server (if everything else is okay).
