Summary: Syntax Error: DocumentRoot must be a directory...
Product: Apache httpd-2.0
Version: 2.0.52
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: Runtime Config
AssignedTo: bugs@httpd.apache.org
ReportedBy: vadtec@vadtec.net
I am running Fedora Core 3 with Apache 2.0.52. I have used Apache previously and
never had this problem.
When I manually edit the httpd.conf file, specifically the DocuemntRoot
directive, and restart the server, I get this error:
httpd failed. The error was: Starting httpd: Syntax error on line 361 of
/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf:
DocumentRoot must be a directory
[FAILED]
I restart the server from within the Service Configuration app provided by Fedora.
Here is what I set my DocumentRoot to:
DocumentRoot /home/vadtec/website
I have tried this as well:
DocumentRoot "/home/vadtec/website"
DocumentRoot "/home/vadtec/website/"
DocumentRoot /home/vadtec/website/
None of them work. I know that this is an actuall directory. (It's not rocket
science.) However, if I set the DocumentRoot to be /var/www/html, in any of the
forms above, it works just fine.
I run Apahce as apache with a group of apache. My ServerRoot is /etc/httpd and
that is where all my config files are kept. Plain vanilla for the most part. As
well, when I do set the DocumentRoot to /var/www/html and define a virtual host
with a different DocumentRoot (not VirtualDocumentRoot), I get this when I try
to view the virtual host (setup on 127.0.0.2:80):
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access / on this server.
Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an
ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apache/2.0.52 (Fedora) Server at localhost Port 80
The DocumentRoot for the virtual host is /home/vadtec/website.
I found one other reference to this bug, but it is for Windows (Bug # 33781).
I have never had this kind of problem, and its getting rather annoying. I have
not been able to reproduce this error on my web hosting company's server, but I
dont get to edit the config file directly anyways. This only happens on my home
PC running Fedora Core 3 & Apache 2.0.52 with Linux kernel 2.6.9-1.667. However,
this website will be going into production and I would rather not have to reset
all my hard links once I upload it to the web host.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
