Can't get JAMES running on XP with Mysql 5.0.15 and JDK 1.5

 Hi,
I am new here. Since a few weeks I 've been trying to get JAMES running
in combination with a MySQL database (5.0.15 nt), but the initialisation
fails with:
Error waiting for handshake! Is there a server running on 3306? And a
stack trace starting somewhere in the BasicDataSource (Connection)
class. 
I read something about a new security feature with MySQL 5.0, but
because of the lack of detailed knowledge on that, I could not find an
appropriate option in the mysql server configuration. I've tried to
connect with a little sample code to retrieve data from the server using
the mm.mysql.Driver that comes with JAMES and it worked fine. 

Has someone an idea whyt might go wrong and/or provide me with a working
example of a config.xml for such or a similar JAMES/MySQL server setup?
