Does Fedora Core 3/Sun JDK1.5.0 work for anyone?

When I try and build Geronimo on Fedora Core 3 with the Sun 1.5.0 JDK I
get a Hotspot crash - is this working for anyone else?

Yes.

We had the same problem in Cocoon and I guess the same apply for Geronimo.
I wrote on the Cocoon wiki a solution:

http://wiki.apache.org/cocoon/Installing?action=highlight&value=fedora

<snip>
FC3 comes with own versions for java, javac, jar and optionally for ant.
You need to remove the links placed in /usr/bin for this files. All these
files are pointing to /etc/alternatives and from there point to
/usr/share/java/libgcj-java*-placeholder.sh
</snip>

	Now that you mention it, we had a machine with bad RAM that
manifested under JDK 1.5 but not 1.4. Doing a large bzip2 operation also
caused it to fail regularly, and we confirmed it with memtest86.
Replacement RAM fixed the problem.

Hi again!

Since I have no plans to run the java shipped in fedora, I prefer to
delete the Fedora Java links in /usr/bin/

If you are having troubles, try to check the JVM:

$ java -version

In FC3, what I do is to set the JAVA_HOME in the /etc/profile or in your
own .bash_profile:

export JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_06
pathmunge $JAVA_HOME/jre/bin after

:-D

A simple memtest: boot from the fedora CD's and run the CD's test. ;-)

Might be worth it to run http://www.memtest86.com/.

Yes it did. I had the Sun JDK's installed and thought that things would
use JAVA_HOME (set in profile) to locate tools; you made me realize I
should symlink the others as well. I had already gone back to 1.4.2
though and am looking to see if that is stable first.

However, if Unix commands like find and rm are dumping then it makes me
question if the machine itself is acting up (bad memory or CPU failure).

Desktop P4/2.4 no HT, 1GB RAM, SATA hard drive (seen as SCSI)

I am just building Geronimo and it is crashing compiling. I had only
switched /usr/bin/java to the Sun JDK but now have switched all. I have
also gone back to 1.4.2_06.

I am questioning the machine itself as "find" was giving a SEGV just
scanning the source tree.

	What's the machine? My experience with SuSE 9.2 (kernel 2.6.8)
and the uberbuild has been (Sun JVM unless otherwise noted):

Desktop P4/HT (SMP kernel)
 - 1.4.2_06: HotSpot crash in Remoting test
 - 1.5.0: CORBA itest failure

Laptop PM (UP kernel)
 - 1.4.2_06: Remoting test hang
 - 1.5.0: CORBA itest failure

Desktop Opteron (NUMA SMP kernel)
 - Blackdown 1.4.2 rc1: Segfault during itest
 - 1.4.2_06: Remoting test crash (Real-time signal 28)
 - 1.5.0: CORBA itest failure

	Clearly 1.5 works better for me than 1.4, in that it doesn't
actually crash. Also, it's the NIO remoting code that's responsible for
all the worst behavior for me. It is a little frustrating that none of my
environments actually build successfully, but Alan said he hoped to get
the CORBA fix in soon...
