[Issue 126269] New: Two Spaces Between Sentences for Monospaced Fonts

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126269

          Issue ID: 126269
        Issue Type: ENHANCEMENT
Summary: Two Spaces Between Sentences for Monospaced Fonts
           Product: Writer
           Version: 4.1.1
          Hardware: PC
                OS: Windows XP
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P5
         Component: editing
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: openofficebugs@gmail.com

Monospaced fonts such as Courier require two spaces after the end of a
sentence.
Disabling the "Ignore double spaces" option is a partial solution, since users
can still type sentences with one space between them.
Would it be possible to enforce two spaces between sentences just for this
font?

Your bug report is being closed as NOT_AN_ISSUE due to a lack of information
which is needed in order to accurately reproduce and confirm the problem. We
need the following information:

a) Provide a step-by-step procedure to reproduce (the simpler will be the
better)

b) Provide any test case(s) which will help us confirm the problem (like a
sample document)

c) Provide screenshots of the problem if you think it might help

Once all of this is done, please set the bug back to UNCONFIRMED and we will
attempt to reproduce the issue.

Is that necessarily a bad thing?
For all we know, it might expand the OpenOffice user base :-)

Here's a link to a blog post that describes the historical development of
sentence spacing:

http://www.heracliteanriver.com/?p=324

Here are some relevant excerpts:

* Literally centuries of typesetters and printers believed that a wider space
was necessary after a period, particularly in the English-speaking world. It
was the standard since at least the time that William Caslon created the first
English typeface in the early 1700s (and part of a tradition that went back
further), and it was not seriously questioned among English or American
typesetters until the 1920s or so.
* The “standard” of one space is maybe 60 years old at the most, with some
publishers retaining wider spaces as a house style well into the 1950s and even
a few in the 1960s.

Monospaced fonts are equivalent to the fonts of a typewriter. I've never seen
that anyone wrote two spaces after a sentence.

a) Step-by-step procedure:

First, start OpenOffice Writer. Then, set the font to a monospaced font such
as Courier. Next, type two or more sentences. Writer will allow you to put
only one space after the period in each sentence, even though monospaced fonts
require two spaces after the period.

b) Test cases:

Please see the document attached to Comment #2.

Please look at section 3.1 in "English Style Guide" (link above in URL). It
says, "stops (. ? ! : ;) are always followed by only a single (not a double)
space."

There is no exception for monospaced fonts.

>From some other discussions (for example on dict.cc) I guess, that a double
space was taught for writing English on typewriters in some countries about 50
years ago.

I support "NOT_AN_ISSUE".
