Performance difference between single and multiple repositories

Is checkout / checking faster on smaller repositories as compared to one
gigantic repository ?

As far as I know, the size on disk of the repository on the server  
isn't supposed to matter so much. What matters is the size of the  
working copy, or more particularly how many directories are in the  
working copy. This is why it's a useful speed-enhancing practice to  
check out only the part of the repository you're interested in, to  
update only the part of the working copy you're interested in, and to  
check in only the part of the working copy you're working in. That  
way Subversion doesn't have to waste time charting lots of  
directories if you already know there aren't any changes in them.
