Changing the portlet mode of other portlets

 
Hi All,
   Is it possible to change the mode of the portlet A, say from VIEW
mode to EDIT mode by invoking some API from the process Action method of
portlet B ?

   If this is not possible, is it possible to change the mode of the
portlet from View to Edit in the doView method of the same portlet ?
  
   Any help or suggestion is highly appreciated.
