General Question: Understand Map and Reduce but not the applications

I coded a simple example with python (from code online) to perform a 
distributed map and reduce with hadoop.  My question; how does map-reduce 
turn into searchable, distributed applications?

Maybe I am minimizing the complexity of the problem?

Eg,

Word - Count

Url = http://www.dog.com

Dog - 542
Cat - 340

Url = http://www.cat.com

Cat - 340
Dog - 128
