wont startup (help!)

Hi,

I'm having some problems actually starting tomcat up. I am using version
3.1 on Linux 2.2.13 (redhat).
Although the installation is complete, here is what happens when i run tomcat:

[/usr/local/httpd/tomcat/shell]# ./tomcat.sh start
Using classpath:
.:/usr/local/httpd/tomcat/lib/*:/usr/local/jdk1.2.2/bin/../lib/tools.jar
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:
org/apache/tomcat/shell/Startup

It's driving me nuts, I know there is a Startup.class, in
/usr/local/httpd/tomcat/j2ee/org/apache/tomcat/shell, but because I'm not
very familiar with Java (setting it up as a service), I'm lost as what I
should do.

If anyone could assist it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Jodie <jo...@csinet.com.au>

P.S. Is it just me, or is the tomcat documentation very vague, and has
conflicting views in various sections.

Re: wont startup (help!) - questions

Thankyou for your help (Jason - I assume). Although this clears up a few
issues I was having understanding what the environment settings should be,
it unfortunately did not fix the problem.

The problem was, I was using the src package instead of the bin package
(smart huh), and thus I was pretty confused when the documentation refered
to a different directory layout.

Now that I have the bin package and everything seems to startup fine, I
have a few questions which I didn't find in the faq-o-matic or userguide,
which are in regard to apache integration.

1.) The ApJservMount apache conf directive takes how many arguments (?),
and why does the second argument always seem to be /root, does '/root' have
a special meaning, or is it just an example of declaring multiple URI
paths? eg. ApJServMount /stuff /morestuff /evenmorestuff

2.) Can virtualhosts be configured to use the same JVM (and are there any
problems caused by this)? The userguide demonstrates how to use multiple
JVMs per virtualhost, I would rather them share one (so less resources are
used) if possible.

3.) Is it not enough to, add the types and handlers (AddType, AddHandler),
for .jsp, instead of 'mapping contexts'

4.) What is an example of having tomcat handle requests
for somehost.com/servlets (system path /virtual/somehost/content/servlets)?

Again, if anyone could answer any of those questions for me, it would be
appreciated.

Thanks,

Jodie <jo...@csinet.com.au>

Re: wont startup (help!)

Posted by Jason & Golda Hoffman <ho...@dfw.net>.
It looks like your classpath is pointing to the wrong places.
/usr/local/jdk1.2.2/bin should probably be: /usr/local/jdk1.2.2/lib

Also, I am not sure if you typed this in or cut and pasted, but there should be a
colon after "/usr/local/jdk1.2.2/lib" and before the "../lib/tools.jar "

You might also verify the settings of the TOMCAT_HOME and JAVA_HOME , in addition
to the CLASSPATH variable. Any one of those set incorrectly may be giving you
problems.

The TOMCAT_HOME variable should point to the tomcat-jakarta directory which was
created when you unzipped the tomcat distribution file. JAVA_HOME should point to
the directory where your JDK is installed ( looks like /usr/local/jdk1.2.2 .) The
CLASSPATH should be set to point to your the lib directory in the JDK
distribution. ( looks like "/usr/local/jdk1.2.2/lib" ) If these 3 things are
set, then tomcat should run fine with it's examples. No other changes are needed
to get it going. From looking at your writings below, I cant really tell where
exactly what your TOMCAT_HOME should be.

Hope this helps!
