[users@httpd] Apache stop to how after config reload or restart
Hi,
I have 3 apache server acting reverse proxy (mod_proxy) and ssl frontend. All
running centos 4, all updates applied (httpd-2.0.52-22.ent.centos4.rpm).
For some reason when I make a reload in configuration (or restart, even a
reboot) the apache don't get my request replied (the 3-way handshake happen, no
more data), some time after this (randonly time, as I could see) the server
start to reply my requests, first to http latter to https.
I'm currently using perfork (default in CentOS) model, and starting 370
maxclients.
I see this problem happen with load on server and in a server completely
unloaded!
In some tries I see some activity in access.log, but my (and probably many
others) requests. In other time no activity at all.
Nothing on logs that call me attention... even with debug.
Some direction?
best regards,
Klaubert

Not much we can do for you unless you can recreate it.
Another place to look is DNS lookups. For example, make sure you
aren't using hostnames in your <VirtualHost> directives or ProxyBlock
directives.

Hi,
my /dev/urandom is working with no problem.
I do a strace as sugested, and don't found any blocking situation. However the
apache start to connect quickly, no block/hang this time.
The worst part, is that is a random error. Some time the server block, other
time no.

Is your /dev/urandom working? It shouldn't be blocking. Does "cat
/dev/urandom" keep spitting binary stuff at you until you stop it?
Otherwise, you can try running httpd -X under strace to see if there
is another blocking syscall.

Well,
My SSLRandomSeed in ssl.conf is default (for Apache 2.0.52-22, CentOS 4):
SSLRandomSeed startup file:/dev/urandom 256
SSLRandomSeed connect builtin
I forget to mention that the time to serve content range from 2min until 40min.

It sounds like your random number gerator is slow to provide enough
entropy to mod_ssl. Check your SSLRandomSeed directive.
