We have been hitting this bug (with kafka 1.1.1) where the Producer takes forever to load metadata. The issue seems to have been patched in master [here|[https://github.com/apache/kafka/pull/7781]]. 

Would you *recommend* a backport of that above change to 1.1? There are 7-8 changes that need to be cherry picked. The other option is to upgrade to 2.5 (which would be much more involved)
