[1.4.2/linux] "make check" fails in non-english shells

Hi

i just downloaded the svn tarball and compiled it.
the check (make check) faild. after viewing in the logfiles, i found
out, that my shell language made my tests faild.

$ make check
.. this failes

$ (LANG=C make check)
.. all is good, except for a few skipped tests which is what i expected.

I think, it would be good to
a) mention something like this in the INSTALL file (yes, i've read this!)
or
b) reset the language inside the Makefile.

My System:
SuSE Linux 10.0
LANG=de_DE.UTF-8
