Class Not found exception thrown even though...

In my web app which is deployed in an exploded format under the webapps
directory, I have placed the xalan.jar in the directory WEB-INF\lib. In my
code I call TransformerFactory.newInstance() and I get an exception:


javax.xml.transform.TransformerFactoryConfigurationError:
java.lang.ClassNotFoundException:
org.apache.xalan.processor.TransformerFactoryImpl

I am sure the class org.apache.xalan.processor.TransformerFactoryImpl in
part of xalan.jar. This being the case, I am not sure why TOMCAT cannot find
the concerned class. Can anybody help me?
