apache, cronolog and graceful restart

Hi all,

I'm using cronolog 1.6.2 (http://cronolog.org/) to automaticaly rotate my
apache logs daily. After doing a graceful restart (apachectl graceful) I
see the following in my apache-error log:

[Fri Jul 12 15:41:05 2002] [warn] long lost child came home! (pid 16535)
[Fri Jul 12 15:41:05 2002] [warn] long lost child came home! (pid 16534)

apachectl killed the two cronolog processes I used for two virtual hosts
and it's logfiles. Apache respawns two new cronolog processes however
using mod_status I see the following:

KLWLLGKGL_GLKGWK_GKGLKKKGL_LLKLWLGLWKGWGGGGWKKGWKKWGG_WLKK_KKLWW
GGWGGKKGKWK__K_WGKWWGLK_L___GKGGWKWWRGLWGLKGLLKKKKKLLLKKGKKLWGK_
_KW_WKKK_W_KWKWWKKK_WKKKKK_KK_WWK...............................
................................................................

and those 'L' processes refuse to die, i.e. after an hour they still exists.

Every time I graceful restart apache many extra 'L' processes are added. I
guess all those 'L' processes were using the killed cronolog processes and
are now unable to write to the logfile.

Is there anything I can do to keep this from happening, I like cronolog
but have to be able to modify my apache-config once in a while, thus
having to graceful restart apache.

I'm using apache 1.3.26 and cronolog 1.6.2

thanks in advance,
  Wolter Kamphuis
