[DISCUSS] Would we be interested in taking over the launcher from Apache Sling ?

Hi all,

Based on the discussion going on on the Users list about providing a
default web application launcher [1] proposed by Justin Edelson, I have
started a discussion on the Sling developers list on their general
opinion to move the launcher (called launchpad/base in Sling) over to
the Felix project [2].

The result of the discussion basically is, that the Sling community
would be ok with a transfer of the launcher to Felix.

My question to discuss right now is: What is the general opinion of the
Felix community to eventually take over the Sling launchpad/base [3]
module as a generic loader for standalone and web application
environments over to the Apache Felix project ?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Regards
Felix

Hi Felix,

I have two question about the Sling launcher.

I understand that karaf is not just a launcher. As it's part of Felix
project, the Sling launcher may have something in common with karaf's
launcher in main module for general OSGi runtime launch purpose.
What's the difference between Sling launchpad/base and Felix Karaf?

HTTP Service just a standard service exposed by some bundle in my opinion.
How the web application related to the launcher?

It's worth to have an official launcher including script for server
oriented deployment from Felix project to meet the requirement such as
Karaf and Sling project.

Thanks!

I think having multiple launchers is reasonable.

Would this launcher also address the need being discussed to have a
launcher for our HTTP service impl?

Just a brief glance at the SVN repo shows that this launcher is a lot
bigger than Felix' default launcher.

While it is completely fine if the two launchers are completely
separate, it might nice if the default launcher could be made into a
common base, if possible. Again, not necessary, though, if it just
doesn't make sense.

As far as taking over maintenance, well, I assume you Day guys aren't
going anywhere and would be pitching in on it still, right? And it
sounded like Sten and perhaps a couple others are interested in such a
launcher too, so hopefully that wouldn't be an issue.
