Re: autoconf

For the record, my vote goes with a feature-detecting autoconf over the 
current "find your platform and uncomment its settings" system, for both 
ease of use and portability reasons.  I realize it would be a big wallop 
of a change to the sources, but since Tom has done most of the work 
already and is familiar with the process, I'm comfortable with it being 
something to do for a 1.2 around late May/June, say.
