Release Date?

Sun announced the final release of the Java 2 Enterprise Edition today. The
press release indicates that binaries will be available December 17, and sources
sometime in January 2000.

Java 2 Enterprise Edition says it includes Servlet 2.2 final support, but the
beta from September uses the JWSDK1.0 with Servlet 2.1 support.

Does all this mean that some version of Tomcat will ship with the final
Enterprise Edition binaries later this month?

If not, what servlet container will be included in the Enterprise Edition
release? The date indicated is only 9 days from now and Tomcat does not look
finished to me. What am I missing?

Yep.. It ships with code from the repository on the J2EE branch.

Tomcat standalone is in pretty good shape and it passes QA muster for
inclusion into J2EE. There's some things going on in the main branch that
aren't in the code that went into J2EE. The part that's not done at this
point is the Apache integration.

Hi.

Craig, you got it right on. J2EE RI is based on Servlet 2.2 and JSP 1.1
implementation.

We (J2EE RI group) did bugfixes/feature enhancements in the CVS
branch that we cared about. This CVS branch has been merged back
into the CVS trunk.

This model really worked well with J2EE RI this time around. Any
project that wants to embed tomcat web server may want to emulate
this strategy.

Thanx

My understanding (don't quote me on this -- ask Sun) is that it will include a
customized snapshot of Tomcat. There was substantial development work done on a
separate J2EE-RI branch in the CVS tree, and many of the changes have been merged
back into the main branch, but J2EE-RI will probably include the current state of
the custom branch.

"Finished" is a matter of perspective. Apparently the J2EE-RI team was satisfied
that it fulfilled their requirements.

A bunch of the things that we really want for Tomcat (fully tested and optimized
support for the Apache connector, optimizations for general performance, some
cleaned up code, and some new features) are totally irrelevant to J2EE-RI.
