Releasing Camel 3.18.2 and 3.19.0 in September

It would be good to get a new patch release of 3.18.2 out sooner.

And then a 3.19.0 by the end of this month.

Gregor if you are listening then how would that look for you?

So there were a problem on Camel Spring Boot and we'll need this fix

So I think we'll need to restart.

Hi

So we are closing down for the 3.19.0 release which Gregor will cut next
week.
I have moved tickets to 3.20, but if you find time to work on any of that
before next week then hurry up.

Hi

Our next release target is 3.19.0 and we should close down so we can get
ready soonish to cut the release.
There are 19 JIRAs with 3.19.0 as version, but you can move things to 3.20
if we dont have time.

Lets see where we are towards the end of this week.

Hi All,

The fix I mentioned before has been merged into main and camel-3.18.x, so it is ok on my side.

Thank you all, especially Gregor for your patience,

Is it possible to upgrade to .49 after the releases? I have already upgraded camel 3.18 to .48.1

Hi

Yeah that is fine as they dont really dont do LTS releases on patch level,
so we need to bump up with their rolling releases (according to that FAQ)
so to get CVEs etc then its acceptable to go from .45 to .48 etc.
In fact the last release is .49 so maybe try to jump to that release.

Re: Releasing Camel 3.18.2 and 3.19.0 in September

Posted by Nicolas Filotto <nf...@talend.com>.
Hi Claus,

Thank you for your answer. Just to be sure that I get it right, we can upgrade in case of a patch release, we cannot upgrade in case of major release but what about a minor release? In this case, we would need to upgrade grpc from minor release (1.45) to another (1.48), it is still acceptable? If so, I will cherry pick the upgrade commit in the branch 3.18.

Thank you in advance
Nicolas

Hi

Yes its okay to update a 3rd party JAR with a new patch release such as the
gRPC upgrade. However doing a major upgrade eg 1.2.3 to 2.0.1 is not
possible.

Hi

Do I understand it correctly that a minor upgrade would be allowed as well? E.g. upgrading azure-cosmos dependency from 4.29.1 to 4.35.0?
If so, I could look into a (simpler) fix today to only align all those azure-XXX dependencies (on the camel-3.18.x branch) to azure-sdk-bom version 1.2.5 without the change below that I back-ported yesterday from the main branch.

The rational behind all this is, once ready, to have a way to back-port the fix for https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CAMEL-18451 <https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CAMEL-18451> which currently is blocked by https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CAMEL-18452 <https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CAMEL-18452> as described in JIRA.

Hi Gregor

We are now ready for cutting the 3.18.2 release.
All JIRAs are resolved and PRs merged.
RAT and checkstyle passes on all 3 repos.

I can start with the release any other way this week.

The PR is waiting for a review and once merged, I would need to backport in the 3.18.x branch to have it ideally in 3.18.2. However, I've just realized that the grpc version has changed between Camel 3.18 and 3.19, it has been upgraded from 1.45.0 to 1.48.1 such that it cannot be cherry picked unless it is upgraded too in the 3.18 branch. I don't know if upgrading the grpc version in the 3.18 branch is something doable knowing that grpc 1.45.0 is already no more supported according to the FAQ https://grpc.io/docs/what-is-grpc/faq/#how-long-are-grpc-releases-supported-for and Camel 3.18 is an LTS. Any idea on this ? In other words, what is th policy of Camel regarding third-party libraries with limited support duration used in an LTS version?

Hi Gregor,

I don't know when you would like to start the release but I would need to have this fix https://github.com/apache/camel-karaf/pull/180 included.
