Guys, I want to go ahead and commit this patch, because stepping on silently missing BIGTOP_HOME is a pain. Whatever has been discussed here is still valid of course, but we should be able to work on that in a subsequent JIRAs, instead of dragging the real fix out forever. 

The patch will be committed in BIGTOP-2175.
