Oracle-JDK Advisory

Based on https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LEGAL-484 - I'm wondering if
we should provide an advisory to our committers that they should be
cautious using the Oracle JDK for their personal development of Apache
software. Anyone have strong thoughts on the topic?

My read is that the Oracle proprietary license terms for Java SE model
developers as either working for their employer ("internal") or playing
games and hacking Raspberry Pis ("personal"). The author of the license
either has no concept of a developer who is working in the open and
contributing to a code community ("community development") or intends to
disrupt such activity. Either way I agree with Hen that Apache committers
(and indeed all other open source developers) would be well advised to
avoid any activity under the terms of this license.

I don’t understand that statement (how “community development” has anything to do with it).

My read of the license is that for non-personal uses (as they defined it) or uses running software they don’t approve, they are going to charge for it.

It’s a crappy commercial license.

I’ve switched everything I do personally/professionally/commercially to openJDK much to my chagrin, but it’s just too \ dangerous to fool with Oracle JDK, IMO.

I very much agree with your evaluation. The terms have been framed in a
worldview that is at odds with community development.
