session management and link tool

hi all!

sorry if this is a stupid question (i suppose it is), but i'm stuck and can't
find any help in the docu or the mailing list archive.

i'm using apache's mod_rewrite to get rid of the
"/appname/servlet/appname/templates" part of the url, which works great.
first, i tried to write my own link-tool, but after three or four days
fiddling around i finally aborted this idea and decided to just manually
build the links inside my project.
so, for example, i just write <a href="/thispage.vm"> and let mod_rewrite
expand it to the full path.
this also works, but somehow i lose the ability to authenticate users.
everytime i access a protected page, i need to re-authenticate.

i notice that the link-tool appends a ";jsessionid=[...]" to all links. is
this how the sessions are managed? if this is what i need for getting
authentication to work again, how can i get that id to append it to my links?

frankly, i just don't understand how the session management works.

btw - i'm using tomcat 4.0.4

thanks,

rick
