   Doing some more research into this... I don't think it's worth it. 
   
   Most of the package size (<95%) comes from the external dependency (needle) and its dependencies, rather than the the project code. Bundling and shipping external dependencies in the published library code is not compatible with ASF rules on releases. This means there will be minimal benefits from doing the bundling for the project code. 
   
   I'm going to close this issue as it doesn't seem worth doing.
