M4 or beta-1, that is the question

I'm starting to look at the end of the month release. I wanted to
get some feedback on where everyone thinks we're at. I'm starting to
look at outstanding snapshots and the like. For the end of this
month I'd like to cut a branch on Mon / Tue.

So the real question is do we go with a beta or a milestone?

Thoughts?

I'd say the 2nd option is what I like the most.

The milestone naming is fine. But whatever we do, let's do it
consistently in the future too. We are establishing a precedent here.

1) stay with milestones even when we are feature complete.
2) have milestones before we are feature complete and switch to beta
when we are feature complete.

Any which way is fine as long as we consistently adopt the same naming
convention in the future too.

Cheers

According to this definition (excerpt below) we should use M4:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&hs=N0a&defl=en&q=define:Beta+version&sa=X&oi=glossary_definition&ct=title

Thanks
Anita

soon as possible."

Personally, I'd say we should stick with the milestone naming. No
need to introduce a new naming convention.

Watching dev@tomcat I noticed that when they cut a release they
actually hold a vote to determine if its alpha / beta / stable. Our
terminology is different of course but we could do something similar
from a procedural point of view. This also provides a pretty easy way
for the dev community at large to chime in with their opinions, even
if their votes are non-binding.

Best wishes,
Paul

And me. I like the naming. So the next release would be M4 whereas
when TCK passes it will go as RC1 and after a two weeks or so it's to
be a GA. I assume, the time periods between releases will likely be
different.

+1 for M4.

Why not just go M<whatever> up until we are ready to do
RC<whatever>. I don't really see value the beta stage... but thats
just me :-)

I think it's another milestone until we either reach function complete
and/or tck passing. Either of those two criteria would push this to
something closer to a release and therefore merit a name that indicates
we're "almost" there. Until that time I think this is another milestone.
