Apart from the syntax issue within the PDF itself PDFBox currently handles the combination similar to [^Inserted.Acrobat.pdf]. So there is nothing wrong with the current code. But one might expect a result similar to [^Merged.acrobat.pdf]. So the question remains if we want to change the current handling to be in line with the latter result.

[~tilman] I wouldn't commit the change as is as it's different from how Acrobat handles it - although very similar. If we change it I'd prefer to mimic Acrobats result.
