Incubator PMC/Board report for Feb 2012 ([ppmc])

Dear podling,

This email was sent by an automated system on behalf of the Apache Incubator PMC.
It is an initial reminder to give you plenty of time to prepare your quarterly
board report.

The board meeting is scheduled for Wed, 15 February 2012, 10:00:00 PST. The report
for your podling will form a part of the Incubator PMC report. The Incubator PMC
requires your report to be submitted 2 weeks before the board meeting, to allow
sufficient time for review and submission (Wed, Feb 1st).

Please submit your report with sufficient time to allow the incubator PMC, and
subsequently board members to review and digest. Again, the very latest you
should submit your report is 2 weeks prior to the board meeting.

Thanks,

The Apache Incubator PMC

Submitting your Report
----------------------

Your report should contain the following:

 * Your project name
 * A brief description of your project, which assumes no knowledge of the project
   or necessarily of its field
 * A list of the three most important issues to address in the move towards
   graduation.
 * Any issues that the Incubator PMC or ASF Board might wish/need to be aware of
 * How has the community developed since the last report
 * How has the project developed since the last report.

This should be appended to the Incubator Wiki page at:

  http://wiki.apache.org/incubator/February2012

Note: This manually populated. You may need to wait a little before this page is
      created from a template.

Mentors
-------
Mentors should review reports for their project(s) and sign them off on the
Incubator wiki page. Signing off reports shows that you are following the
project - projects that are not signed may raise alarms for the Incubator PMC.

Yeah I was gonna add something about the stuff that has been done with
infra, but you beat me to it. :-)

Looks good to me.

In that case, I added the following to the report to discuss those aspects:

Since incubation some effort has gone into setting up some of our apache
infrastructure, most notably an instance of Trac to use for project and
issue planning. We also have set up:
  * Mailing lists
  * Commit access for all the initial committers
  * Placeholder pages for the main website and Trac front pages

If anyone can word it better or thinks of other items that are worth
adding to that list, I would be grateful.

A repeat of the link for everyone:

I actually think that would be a valuable addition, since a
non-trivial amount of work has gone into setting that up.

You need to be logged into the wiki to make changes (which means you
need an account on the wiki system). If you don't already have an
account, it should be easy to create one, though it's been long enough
for me that I don't recall how to do so.

Thanks for the review!

I wasn't particularly helpful in my description of the problem - and it
seems to be simply a matter of creating my account. I have no idea why I
suspected anything else - I'll blame lack of sleep.

Actually, if we did want to edit the page, I am not clear on how that
would be done yet.. If I find out, I can let you know but I assume

I think that I am very happy with what you have written. I might have
considered including some aspects of progress associated with the apache
infrastructure but, as you managed to find plenty to say, the lack of
this does not worry me too much.

As a Director, I use the same criteria that I use for any other report
to the Board :-) ... Something along the lines of: "What is it? What
is it up to? Anything to be concerned about?"

I've signed-off on it in the wiki.

This is the initial content for the report. Please elaborate and
expand upon it by editing the appropriate section of this wiki page:
http://wiki.apache.org/incubator/February2012

The report requires sign off by the mentors (currently Greg and I)
before it is considered final. I've not yet done so, and while I'm
not sure what Greg's criteria for signing off are, I would like to see
at least a couple of people review (and edit if needed) the report
before I sign off on it.

[[[
Bloodhound is an issue tracker derivative of Trac, with the goal of
making deployment easy, and usage intuitive.

Bloodhound has been incubating since December 2011.

The current three most important issues toward graduation are:
  1. Improving community diversity
  2. Lowering the barrier to entry and development
  3. Creating shippable releases and getting user feedback

We missed the report last month, largely due to inattention. There
were a number of discussions about the relationship between Bloodhound
and Trac in early January, but those appear to have been resolved to
the satisfaction of both sets of developers and the Incubator PMC.

The community is going through a learning process about how the ASF
functions, and how to be inclusive of the external community.
Although most of the current developers are colocated, the mailing
lists have started to see increased activity, as the existing
community learns to work in a more open manner. A couple of
additional people have expressed interest in participating, and are
actively posting to the mailing list. A number of mockup designs have
started to flow into the repository.

The primary goals of the community include getting something potential
developers can play with into the repository, and creating a release
to get some widespread exposure to the project.

Hey all:
I'll volunteer to put this together over the next few hours, and then
solicit feedback / improvements.

(Though I'm a bit miffed that the "reminder" was sent on the day the
report is due, particularly since the reminder says that it "give[s]
[us] plenty of time to prepare". Then again, we should be on top of
this without needing to be reminded.)
