Graphical Configuration Utility

Hi everyone,

I looked for a struts 2 graphical configuration utility and couldn't
find one, you guys probably remember Struts Console created by James Holmes
(www.jamesholmes.com/struts/console/).

So I've started a new project in sourceforge.net to develop one. I've
also imported a first version of the project and it currently opens, creates
new and saves struts 2 configuration files respecting the data type
definition hosted at http://struts.apache.org/dtds/struts-2.0.dtd.

It also allows the user to create, edit and delete all kinds of elements
and validates the resulting XML structure against the DTD.

If anyone wants to take a look at it and give it a try, it's located at
https://sourceforge.net/projects/struts2gui/.

I sincerely appreciate any feedback and of course patches :p

    Regards,

Mauricio Peccorini

Thanks for the important tip Allen, I'll make sure I make it clear in the
project's site that JDK6 is required.

You probably ought to just compile for jdk6. Since javax.swing.GroupLayout is not available in jdk5, at least the user of jdk5 would get a message that is a bit better than the ClassNotFoundException you get in jdk5.

Hi Milan, I'm not sure of what you mean by "visualize" a Struts 2
application. The program will not show a drawing off the elements
interconnected by arrows as other more advanced tools did for Struts 1. This
program will show all the elements in your struts.xml in a hierarchical view
(a tree) and will allow you to select the elements and change the attributes
in panels specific for each element type. It will also allow you to create
new elements, delete elements and validate the entire structure of the
configuration file.

Great thing to do! Is it possible to visualise S2 appliaction from struts.xml
? I'm asking this because I didn't manage to run existing plug-in for that.

If you select the newly created action, package, etc. in the tree view, a
panel will show at the right side with all the attributes the element
accepts.

Kindest regards,

well that is not the issue with the S2GUI jar... but with the Java itself...

When the jar file having dependencies is in folder names '!' (with out
quotes, only exclamatory sign) in windows, is is failing to open the main
class.

When I moved out the '!' folder, it is working fine. This is second time I
scratched my head with this bug.. Any way this time I filed a bug in Sun
site.. waiting for their reply.

Finally I was able to run ur jar..

I've created new one, by

File > New > on struts, Add Package > on New Package, New Action.

But then how do I type/map/configure actions there... I m clueless

I'm very glad this was something that people wanted, I was afraid I could
get 100 messages pointing me to already developed applications :p

I tried the following and worked perfectly:

1. Unzip Struts2GUI-0.1-alfa-fulldist.zip
2. In a Command Window / Terminal, change the directory to the folder where
the jar resides
3. Execute the following command:

In Windows:
java -classpath
lib\appframework-1.0.3.jar:lib\beansbinding-1.2.1.jar:lib\castor-1.2.jar:lib\castor-1.2-xml.jar:lib\castor-1.2-xml-schema.jar:lib\commons-logging-1.1.1.jar:lib\serializer.jar:lib\swing-worker-1.1.jar:lib\xercesImpl.jar:lib\xml-apis.jar
-jar Struts2GUI-0.1-alpha.jar

In Unix/Linux:
java -classpath
lib/appframework-1.0.3.jar:lib/beansbinding-1.2.1.jar:lib/castor-1.2.jar:lib/castor-1.2-xml.jar:lib/castor-1.2-xml-schema.jar:lib/commons-logging-1.1.1.jar:lib/serializer.jar:lib/swing-worker-1.1.jar:lib/xercesImpl.jar:lib/xml-apis.jar
-jar Struts2GUI-0.1-alpha.jar

That makes sure all the dependencies are available in the classpath.

Also, what java version are you using? I'm compiling for JDK5 but I'm
actually using JDK6 (1.6.0_11)

I hope this helps

All depends on Licences of the dependencies i think.

Spring brings all its dependencies in the full distribution.

Hi Oscar,

The Release Notes
(https://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?group_id=247875&release_id=647398)
show the list of dependencies. You're probably missing one or some of them.
I think the best way to avoid this problem would be to release a "fat jar"
with all the classes the application depends on, but this is the first time
I publish an open source project and I don't know if that's legal or even
ethical.
