New contributor seeking a suitable Apache project

Dear Apache Software Foundation Community Team,

I am reaching out to ask how I could contribute to Apache Software
Foundation Community as a remote volunteer or open-source contributor.
Your work in java, web, data and project communities is closely
connected with both my technical interests and my desire to use
technology for practical social impact.

I am a final-semester Computer Science student at COMSATS University
Islamabad, Abbottabad Campus. My final-year project, HIFAZAT, combines
ESP32 sensor data, Firebase, machine-learning models and a Flutter
application to assess the safety of water, milk and cooking oil. This
work has given me practical experience with Python, TensorFlow, NumPy,
Pandas, APIs and data processing.

Alongside my technical work, I served as a university ambassador with
The Project Suicide mental-health awareness initiative, supporting
awareness activities for students. I have also led student teams,
coordinated volunteers and helped organize a university event
involving around 200 participants. These experiences taught me to
communicate responsibly, follow through on commitments and work with
people from different backgrounds.

I am based in Pakistan and can contribute remotely. I have attached my
resume for context. If there is a project, issue, working group or
newcomer pathway where my skills would be useful, I would appreciate
your guidance on the best place to begin.

Thank you for your time. I would genuinely appreciate any direction
you can provide.

Best regards,
Muhammad Osama

Hi Muhammad,

Welcome! A few suggestions based on your interests:

Since you mention Python, TensorFlow, and data processing, you might look at:
- Apache Airflow (workflow orchestration, Python-native) - https://github.com/apache/airflow
- Apache Beam (data processing pipelines) - https://github.com/apache/beam
- Apache Spark (large-scale data, has Python APIs) - https://github.com/apache/spark

You can browse all Apache projects filtered by language here:
https://projects.apache.org/projects.html?language#Python
https://projects.apache.org/projects.html?language#Java

For getting started as a contributor, we have docs here:
https://community.apache.org/newcomers/gettingStarted.html

The general pattern is: find a project that interests you, subscribe to
its dev@ mailing list, look for issues tagged "good first issue" on
their issue tracker, and introduce yourself there. Each project has its
own community and contribution process -- this list (dev@community) is
for ComDev meta-discussion, not where project-level contribution
happens.

Good luck, and let us know if you have questions about finding the
right fit.
