Stefan's responses are accurate.

FTR, ApacheDS support both the {{Sort}} control and the {{PagedSearch}} control, that allows you to get a sorted list, block by block. The problem is that you have to check for every backend if they support those features, and as Stefan said, there are server side limits that can block you.

Nevertheless, this method is *really* a bad idea. It makes no sense, and it should not even exist as is.
