Site homepage style changes [Preview]

Hi,

I tried with these simple changes on the homepage style to make it look more
compact.

1) Brighter Logo image + Smaller TomEE Intro section

2) Twitter widget script to display tweets from "ApacheTomEE" account

(I think our present list generated using site/content/dyn/twitter.cgi
takes "tomee" search feed and
does some filtering ? Is that required ? )

3) A background for Latest-News section

See if you like it...

What do you think ?

Re: Site homepage style changes [Preview]

Posted by stratwine <to...@gmail.com>.
A couple of days back I tried around with anything-slider

https://github.com/dcneiner/AnythingSlider )
and came up with something like this-

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/21185523/AnythingSlider/Apache%20TomEE%20%26%20OpenEJB%20%28copy%29.html
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/21185523/AnythingSlider/Apache%20TomEE%20%26%20OpenEJB%20%28copy%29.html

It skewed up the alignment while loading, and I gave up trying to correct
it.

It was good in the part that it supports any html markup (the above page
uses a <li> with an image and static text in it) So adding text, videos
anything is possible.. but a pain to have it set up and working correctly.

I like wowslider the most. I don't think any slider that works with
text/markup rather than image comes with such attractive transition effects.
Also wowslider seems to provide a way to save the setup as a project file.
Could have it checked in to svn and add/edit new image easily. Also looks
much better than coinslider.

+1 for wowslider

To me the coinslider sample [1] looks the most unobtrusive Twitter
bootstrap style wise.

Mined stackoverflow for a while to find the right bits for a simple jQuery approach. Not fancy, but that's the idea:

Re: Site homepage style changes [Preview]

Posted by David Blevins <da...@gmail.com>.
On the right track. Not a fan of all the dressing these libraries seem to want to add. They introduce style elements which really clash with the Twitter bootstrap style.

I wonder if it is possible to not change the style (no boxes with tabs and dark backgrounds or navigation) and just change different text?

Maybe we don't even need a library for that. A little loop with a sleep and a jQuery to set the text might do the trick.

Hi,

I played a bit with coinslider. Please let me know what you think.

 -> http://people.apache.org/~dsh/openejb-coinslider/

PS: it's using a single image with multiple text snippets.

Cheers
Daniel

an image as their foundation... at least the ones I found so far.

I wonder if we could just leave the image there and rotate different text out?

We could easily keep a set of half a dozen text quips fresh and up to date.

Both Wowslider and Coinslider are based on jQuery where Coinslider is
open source (MIT) and Wowslider "only" free for non-commercial use.
Wow slider allows to have both text and hyperlinks on an image and I
guess that's required for the download button if it should be part of
the rotating image.

We could have a look at both of them and decide which to choose.

IMHO we should make it even more "loud and proud" for instance by
using a rotating effect like the one at [1] where we could call out
the most prominent TomEE feature each time we are rotating to the next
page. Unfortunatly I don't know an open source implementation of that
effect at the top off my head so we might consider asking google for a
little help here.

I'm not sure about the changes, but I a really big fan of the person who made them :) Maybe we should discuss making Vishwa a committer?

Vishwa, any thoughts on how we might retain the loud and proud "I'm here" the current site has with TomEE being large and clearly in center stage? If we can find a way to keep that strong impact that'd be great.

My gut feeling is that loud and proud statement is the right kind of message to be making and we might be wise to avoid "safe and comfortable" for a while.
