logo contest

Over beers last night, a few of us started lamenting (once again) at
Subversion's utter lack of a Cool Logo. In the past, we've had a few
serious and not-so-serious ideas presented:

       http://www.red-bean.com/fitz/svn.html

I think it would be neat to have some kind of a logo contest.

1. Create a second repository on svn.collab.net, and make it world
    readable and writable.

2. Require submitters to commit their submission to the repository.
This would be (in part) a sort of fun publicity stunt:

      * it would force people to build and toy with an svn client

      * it would showcase the fact that our repository is browseable
(so anyone can view the submissions with their browser)

3. Offer the winner eternal fame, and maybe a T-shirt. :-)

Debian seemed to have real success with their own logo contest, and I
figured we'd have just as much fun with it.

The only part of this idea we've not yet figured out is: "can we find
a process for choosing a winner, a process which is guaranteed to
terminate?"

I mean, one such process would be: "Brane chooses the winner." But's
that's not a system anyone would really want. :-)

The options we're kicking around:

  A. have committers vote.
  B. have (committers + anyone who has ever sent a patch) vote.
  C. have the general public vote.

(C) is probably very satisifying for the world, but then we end up in
some kind of entangled mess of trying to count votes, prevent
ballot-box-stuffing, and so on. :-(

Another idea:

  D. have the general public narrow down the choices to the top 3, and
then have committer-like folk choose one of them.

Anyway, just thought I throw this idea out there, see what people think. :-)

Why not giving 10 votes to members of the core-team, 5 votes for
active submitters and 1 vote to ordinary people? The nubers could be
variated like 3/2/1 or 100/10/1 or some such. I think you got the
idea?

It's an old inside joke. Ask holsta (Alex Holst <a...@area51.dk>).

Mmm, good point. Or maybe we should just leave the "masses" out of
this. ;-)

Great stuff!

I vote for 11 and then 10. What's with all the bananas?

+1 for A & B. -1 for C.

-0.

How about the top 10 instead of the top 3. My concern is that
a favorite logo for the developers may not make it into the top X,
and given that we did the work, how do we ensure that logos we like
are in the list? Increasing the number would help ensure that.

Best,
Blair

And posters for the top 10 :-)

Good idea. I would submit that B makes the most sense, because it's
restricted to people that care. If people who care and sent in patches
can't draw, they can find a friend to draw for them.

I like (C).

On reflection, I think the likelihood of ballot box stuffing is pretty
slim -- an honor system will do fine here. The method of voting
should be to commit your vote to a file named "VOTES" in the same
repository. We can monitor the commit emails for safety.

Oh, and let's use approval voting. That is, you can vote (once) for
each logo you like. Thus, *not* voting for a particular logo is
equivalent to voting against it.

the fact is, the #10 #11 look really very good. i think i'll vote for
    them anyway. :)

Not at all. The source belongs to the community. We trust them
with the code. IMHO, we can trust them with the logo. If there
is a controversy, then option D (committers) can resolve it. But,
it's so unlikely that it'll be needed. -- justin

Not afraid of the unwashed masses? :-)

Hold on, we're not voting on anything yet, folks. That web page is
very old. Once we get the contest going, people can re-commit images
from that page to the "official" repository as serious entries. I
only posted the old URL for amusement...

Brane would.

I like C because I think we'll have a consensus.

My vote is for #11 and I tend to agree with Greg regarding his
point in #13. -- justin

If non-A, my vote is for 10. I like the 10/11/13 theme, but am concerned
11's extra text won't scale down well.
