[jira] [Created] (ETCH-157) UDP implementation for Java, C# and C
binding
UDP implementation for Java, C# and C binding
---------------------------------------------
Key: ETCH-157
URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/ETCH-157
Project: Etch
Issue Type: New Feature
Components: build, c-binding, compiler, csharp-binding, examples, java-binding, webpage
Affects Versions: 1.2
Reporter: Armin Müller
Hi,
attached are a series of patches, which add UDP support to Etch for the Java, C# and C bindings. It can be used in place of TCP by replacing the url scheme with UDP. The UDP transport support has been extended with a configurable single session mode, which can be used to run leightweight servers. Please see the attached file "Leightweight_Etch_Server.txt" for a more detailed description of this mode. It has been written in the confluence wiki style syntax and together with the attached images it's suitable for creating a new etch documentation page. The single session mode has been extended further with a support for one-way method calls from the server to multiple clients. For more information, please look at the "Signals" section and the attached patch files.
The UDP implementation for the C binding is limited to single session mode. It limits the ability of etch servers to call methods of more than one remote client. The signal extension can be used to avoid this limitation.
Below a short description of the attached patches is listed. They can be applied using the following GIT command: "git am -k --keep-cr --whitespace=nowarn <path>/*.patch" or can be applied to a clean SVN checkout: "patch -p1 -i <path>/*.patch".
* Add property to skip building of the examples:
0001-build-add-skip.examples-property.patch
* Bump dependency to .NET 4.0 and NUnit 2.5.9. The C# UDP implementation is based on features available in .NET 4.0.
0002-binding-csharp-bump-dependencies-to-.NET-4.0-and-NUn.patch
* Add runtime and build support for the Mono framework (Mono >= 2.10.1, C#).
0003-binding-csharp-add-mono-support.patch
* Make UDP and TCP protocols seamlessly interchangable in Etch (UDP support for C# and Java).
0004-binding-csharp-add-udp-transport-support.patch
0005-binding-java-add-udp-transport-support.patch
* Add configurable server single session mode. URL parameter: UdpConnection.singleSession=true
0006-binding-csharp-add-udp-single-session-support.patch
0007-binding-java-add-udp-single-session-support.patch
* Add inet_who object to track remote etch clients. Required by the C UDP implementation.
0008-binding-c-add-inet_who-object.patch
* Add UDP transport support to the C binding (single session only). The "UdpConnection.singleSession" url parameter is not supported and ignored. A patched version of APR (test with version 1.4.2) is required to send broadcast messages under Linux. The patch has been submitted, but is currently not integrated (see https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=46389).
0009-binding-c-add-UDP-single-session-transport.patch

for what it matters, the packetizer was about chopping a stream into
packets, obviously not needed for udp. the udp transport itself will
reject packets which are too big.
where it is desired that a larger message is chopped into multiple
segments, that might be interesting to both udp and tcp transports.
let's call that the segmenter and consider it part of the larger
discussion of issues around big messages?

we skipped the Packetizer for two reasons:
- it is not necessary for UDP
- the architecture images on the website
(https://cwiki.apache.org/ETCH/architecture.html) also skip the Packetizer
It depends on what is more important. Either skipping the Packetizer and
having a minimal package length or adding the Packetizer and having the
same wire format (e.g. for analyzing it with Wireshark). Surely adding 8
byte per message wouldn't have much impact on the performance, but for
UDP these 8 byte aren't necessary.

The Packetizer shouldn't check if the serialized message fits into one
UDP datagram, because it works protocol independent. It doesn't know if
it is used with TCP or UDP. Checking the UDP datagram length should be
done in the UdpConnection implementation.

Tcp2Connection is very nice for having only one thread and is currently
only available for the Java binding. But besides reducing the threads we
also wanted to reduce the number of Etch Stacks (messagizer, stubs and
remotes), because in some scenarios we don't care about the remote
clients (i.e. track their state) and in these scenarios it is not
necessary to instantiate Etch Stacks for every client.
Single sessions are for example useful when peers send broadcast
messages (e.g. to announce their availability). In this case we just
want to receive the notification. If the receiving peers would
instantiate for every new broadcast sender a new Etch Stack, they can't
decide when the sending peer is not available any more and the list of
instantiated Etch Stacks would continuously increase. Etch is based on
assuming that every connection is stream based, but with UDP also
scenarios without streams are possible, like in the broadcast scenario.
We have used broadcasts and single session mode to implement a service
discovery mechanism without a naming service.
Signals add the ability to explicitly subscribe for certain messages. In
contrast to pure one way messages from servers to clients they are only
sent when a client is interested in these messages. In multiple session
mode the message is sent to exactly one client. With single session mode
it is additionally possible to send one message to multiple clients. In
multiple session mode the application would need to manually keep track
of connected clients like in the chat example.

C binding
Posted by Holger Grandy <Ho...@bmw-carit.de>.
Hi Armin,
thanks for the patches. I suggest we discuss them in multiple
steps, just as you packaged the patch files.
0001: is already committed, this was just a minor change.
0002: same, already committed.
0005:
provides UDPConnection for Java. We have seen that you skipped the Packetizer for this.
This is certainly reasonable for UDP, since you don't have multiple Packets for
one message. On the other hand this also means you change the wire format (the
packetizer also adds the signature and the package length at the beginning). I
would suggest to keep the Packetizer in the chain even for UDP, still adding
signature and length fields. I would furthermore suggest to use the Packetizer
to check, whether the length of the serialized message fits into one UDP datagram
packet. The Message should be discarded with an error, if this is not the case.
Could you provide an update with the Packetizer and length checks enabled?
This is how far we got with looking into the patches in detail until now.
But I have already applied the other patches for Java (Signals, singlesession)
just for testing, too. I would like to start a discussion regarding
singlesession in that context. You added this due to the fact that you don't
want to build up the entire etch stack for every udp peer. This is (in my
opinion) mainly due to resource usage reasons (no multi threading). The same
could be achieved in an implementation similar to Non-Blocking IO (implemented for
TCP/Java in util...nio, TCP2Connection). Did you have a look at this? The problem
is that UDPConnection also extends Connection, which is a Runner, which is basically a Thread
(for every Connection). Wouldn't it be nicer to have a single thread which handles all
the UDP peers, but still having multiple Etch Stacks (stubs+remotes)
for every peer? That would enable Callbacks as far as I can see until now.
Wouldn't this be a nicer way of doing the same thing for UDP? Could you explain
your rationale on implementing singlesession a little bit more?
Furthermore we tried Signals for Java. They establish a kind of an implicit connection on
top of UDP (subscribe, unsubscribe). Of course you don't recognize if your peer looses connection
(cable disconnect...). To fix this we adopted the KeepAlive Filter which is already implemented for
Etch to use the Who-Object as the receiver of the KeepAlive answers (just as you did for regular calls).
This makes it possible to observe the "connection state" on UDP and close the socket in case of peer
"disconnect". Usage of KeepAlive is optional (enabled by URL Parameters).
http://incubator.apache.org/etch/howto-keepalive-filter.html
Could you provide a little more detail on single session? I have a good feeling regarding UDPConnection
in general, so I would suppose to integrate this into trunk (when the Packetizer is added), but I would
like to discuss the single session mechanism a bit more.
Cheers,
Holger & Michael

Armin Müller commented on ETCH-157:
-----------------------------------
Hi Michael,
currently mono support in Etch is experimental and a mono version of Etch is not compiled by default. You have to specify -DUSE.mono to also compile a mono version. After applying my patch, mono support is still not enabled by default and mono binaries are only built, if you have installed a recent mono version (> 2.10.1) in ${ETCH_EXTERNAL_DEPENDS}/mono/<version> according to the path defined in build.dependencies.
I first tried to use mono version 2.6.7 (available in current Ubuntu distributions), and compile the C# binding and examples/example with mono. Unfortunately this wasn't successful. I could compile the binding but no executables were created for the example. Did it work for you before you applied some of the provided UDP patches? After modifying the build scripts to build the example I had errors when running the example.
So I decided to compile and use the latest stable version of mono (2.10.1 at that time). The only remaining error when running one of my programs was, that the HPTimer class depends on Win32 API calls to kernel32.dll, which is only available on Windows. After modifying the HPTimer class, by replacing the Win32 API calls with core .net methods and using mono 2.10.1 I could execute successfully the example and also my programs, which was not possible with mono 2.6.7.
You also mentioned the compatibility list of mono. C# 4.0 is fully implemented. The missing parts of the .net4 framework are not relevant for using Etch. We don't need WPF or the EntityFramework.
So I think we shouldn't try to support mono 2.6. Future releases of distributions will include new versions of mono and if someone wants to use the optional supported mono version of Etch, he can compile the latest mono version (see the script I used below). At least with this patch it is possible to use Etch with mono, which wasn't possible before for me.
Regards,
Armin
Script I used to compile mono on Ubuntu 10.10. Modify MONOVER, GDIPLUSVER and INSTALLDIR.

> Hi,
> attached are a series of patches, which add UDP support to Etch for the Java, C# and C bindings.

> Hi,
> attached are a series of patches, which add UDP support to Etch for the Java, C# and C bindings.

[jira] [Commented] (ETCH-157) UDP implementation for Java, C# and C

Michael Fitzner commented on ETCH-157:
--------------------------------------
Hi Armin,
We added already some patches for the UDP multisession (Java and C# for Windows) patches into the trunk. The migration of the C# patch to a Linux mono system makes however a lot of trouble at the moment. The main issues are that current Linux distributions like ubuntu 10.10, 11.04 have no support for the newest mono version with .Net 4.0 at moment. Also the mono page http://mono-project.com/Compatibility shows that the entire .Net 4.0 framework is not completely finished with the mono 2.8 release. Because of this; the .Net etch binding could not be used on a default desktop system without a special installation of the mono environment. In terms of these limitations I think we should avoid the migrating to .Net 4.0 only because of some classes like BlockingCollection. I would suggest just using thread synchronizations like “synchronized” statement and WaitHandles for the UDP implementation (e.g. for the UdpConnection). If we do so, the etch .Net runtime will stay compatible to the .Net framework 2.0.
Thanks
Michael

> Hi,
> attached are a series of patches, which add UDP support to Etch for the Java, C# and C bindings.

> Hi,
> attached are a series of patches, which add UDP support to Etch for the Java, C# and C bindings.
