[GitHub] [camel-k] christian-roggia opened a new issue, #4107: Introduce and document support for AWS Elastic Container Registry (ECR)

There is currently no documentation associated with ECR and there seems to be no support for this registry at all. Given the market share of AWS it would be probably wise to add support (if missing) for ECR and document it on the website.
It should also be clarified whether ECR is supported or not. The section `ECR` should be added to the [list of registries](https://camel.apache.org/camel-k/next/installation/registry/registry.html) with a few lines explaining the current status.
See also https://github.com/apache/camel-k/issues/1031 https://github.com/apache/camel-k/issues/2241.

Well the problem with that would be that for every `camel-k-kit-<hash-code>@sha256` you would have to create a new "ECR registry" (for example through Cloud formation) because ECR doesn't support hierarchical registries.

I'm not an ECR expert, but as any existing technology it is probably a matter of configuring it opportunely. Amazon ECR is a container registry technology compatible with Camel K requirements of a registry. The problem here is to tune it in a way to handle [container image naming convention](https://camel.apache.org/camel-k/next/installation/registry/registry.html#configuring-registry) we adopt.
I think [ECR private registry](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonECR/latest/userguide/Repositories.html) could be a possible solution to match such a requirement. As written in the official doc, we cannot really test/support/document all existing technology. If some contributor finds a way to provide such configuration is more than welcome.
I'd really avoid to mark something as impossible based on a few stackorverflow answers.

We don't have the concept of support for the registry as each registry have its specific configuration as specified in https://camel.apache.org/camel-k/next/installation/registry/registry.html#configuring-registry-list - however, feel free to include any section on the official documentation to illustrate special configuration, as it happens for other registries.

I'm not sure if Camel can even work with ECR. After some experiments, ECR seems to only support pushing to the repository name directly, and not an image name under the repository URL.

https://github.com/aws/containers/roadmap/issues/853 will need to be resolved before CamelK can work with ECR, due to the reason @jwgmeligmeyling shared above. Once that is resolved on the AWS side, CamelK will be able to be used with ECR, and info can be added to the CamelK docs.

The only way to eventually support or document this is having a walkthrough from people using it daily with camel k.
